From Technical Skills to Social Innovation. What skills do today’s technical students need to transform their knowledge into solutions that create real social impact? The Tech4Impact project has completed its D2.1 – Skills Landscape Analysis, mapping the skills profile and needs of Higher Education and VET learners across 8 European countries. The key finding is clear: Technical students already possess strong capabilities in ICT, engineering, AI and Deep Tech. The main challenge is not simply acquiring more technology skills, but learning how to translate technical expertise into sustainable solutions addressing real social and environmental needs. The analysis highlights four key competence areas: 🔹 Technical Application for Social Good – applying technology to real-world social, environmental and accessibility challenges. 🔹 Entrepreneurial & Business Literacy – strengthening financial literacy, business modelling, market validation, funding and risk management. 🔹 Social Innovation & Impact Awareness – understanding social entrepreneurship, Theory of Change, SDGs and social impact measurement. 🔹 Transversal & Soft Skills – developing communication, pitching, teamwork, leadership, empathy and stakeholder engagement. These findings will directly inform the next Tech4Impact activities, including the development of new HE and VET curricula, mentorship programmes, micro-credentials, the Social Skills Passport and AI-driven skills-matching tools. Our goal is to help young technical minds move from: “I can build the technology” to “I can use technology to create sustainable social impact.” Skills → Innovation → Entrepreneurship → Social Impact
